Final Checklist

Thursday, June 23rd, 2011
  • Shorts… Check!
  • TLW t-shirts…  Check!
  • Bathing suits…  Check!
  • Tooth brush… Check!

What am I forgetting?!?  Ugh….. Yes, the panic of “What am I forgetting?” settles in as you ready your child for camp while you go over all the various piles of things that he or she will need this summer.

But I can tell you that probably the most important thing you can pack for your child is a sense of confidence and reassurance that your child will have an amazing time while at camp this summer.  Remind them that although you will not be there, Jenn, Justin, Cassie and the rest of the TLW team of counselors, group leaders & support staff will be there for them and that they are not alone.

Camp will provide your child with the added self-confidence, self-esteem and resilience that comes from doing things that sometimes takes them out of their comfort zone. You can’t over-estimate the benefit for a child that comes from getting through a challenge without mom or dad.  Jenn, Justin, Cassie and the rest of the TLW team are there to help them to do just that, and to do it successfully!

So, as you go over the various piles of all the camp necessities that are scattered throughout your living room and pack them up in your child’s duffle bags, don’t forget to pack your child up with a bit of “can do” attitude and a dose of positive spirit!  The positive changes in your child of having spent a summer of fun and adventure, and making new friends, will make it clear – It was all well worth it!

Getting Your Child Ready for Sleep Away Camp

Thursday, June 2nd, 2011

With the camp season starting at the end of this month, doing the right things now will help prepare your child for a successful camp experience.  The first and easiest thing to do is make sure that you’re ready to send along all the necessary clothing and equipment recommended by the camp.  Campers feel uneasy when they get to camp and they don’t have “what everybody else has.”  So, be sure you’ve sent the right stuff.

Second, write a few letters to your child and mail them to camp a few days before they leave.  There’s nothing like getting mail (and it doesn’t need to have anything other than warm words from home).  Where possible, encourage friends and other family members to do the same.

Most important, get your child ready emotionally.  Some anxiety should be expected in any child who is going away from home for the first time.  At least two emotions are at play: first, the natural trepidation about leaving one’s parents; and, secondly, the normal anxiety about starting something new and different. You need to encourage your child on both scores.

As a loving parent, parting with your child is tough in and of itself.  Don’t transfer your own doubts, fears and insecurities to your child.  Comments that overplay how much you will miss him or her (or be “lost” without him/her this summer) will only serve to make your child feel guilty about going away.  Telling your child about that great trip you’ll be taking (perhaps with a younger sibling who is staying home) while he/she is away will only accentuate the feeling of “missing out” on something while at camp.  Be reassuring without overly minimizing your child’s possible and natural feelings of homesickness.  Point out that the anxiety is a normal process and that lots of kids feel the same things.  If your child seems anxious, ask what he or she is feeling. Listen and avoid projecting too many of your own feelings and experiences.  Sometimes just having a parent listening makes a child feel better. (more…)

Packing for Camp

Thursday, May 19th, 2011

With just under 40 days until the start of summer 2011, most parents are focusing their concerns on the seemingly overwhelming task of collecting the clothing and other “necessities” needed for their child’s summer at camp. Readying for camp usually boils down to accumulating, labeling, and packing an inordinate amount of items deemed vital to the production of a successful summer. But are parents really “packing” the right things? Are they really preparing themselves and their children to get the most and the best out of a great summer camp experience?

On some levels, not much has changed in the forty years since my father packed me up for my first summer as a camper at Timber Lake Camp. Yet, times surely have changed and so have parental expectations. My father was content in the hope of getting me back in one piece. Parents today have much higher aspirations for their child’s camp experience, commensurate, I suppose, with the higher tuition now demanded. Today’s parents should expect more than the obvious; safety and fun. They should look for real growth in their child. The first step in assuring it, is “packing” correctly – preparing properly for the camp experience. (more…)

Camp Unplugged

Thursday, November 18th, 2010

The love of gadgets is here, and it’s here to stay… And as great as gadgets can be, Timber Lake West believes that having a camp that’s “unplugged” gives children a break from the day-to-day stresses and usage of modern technology where we allow kids to get back down to the basics… Allowing kids to be just that – kids. At TLW, we limit which electronics can be brought in to camp (The Parent Pack you receive in January will outline these for you), and those that we do allow can only be used during rest hour or right before bed.

As we head into the holiday season, you will hear a slightly different spin of an all-time favorite ditty: “All I want for Christmas is my two front teeth…” Remember that? Well today’s version will sound more like “All I want for Christmas is an iPhone…” if you read this report from The New York Times, or this report from CNET.   “…the device is now the Toy of Choice — akin to a treasured stuffed animal — for many 1-, 2- and 3-year-olds.” (more…)

Tween Girl Summit

Thursday, November 4th, 2010

It was a crisp day in New York City when 250 “tween” girls descended upon the Metropolitan Pavilion for the second annual Ally Katzz Tween Girl Summit. The TLC Family of Camps served as one of many sponsors of this unique event.

The chock-full day was spent in two “tracks”: one for moms and one for their tween girls. The girls met with Olympic gold athletes and current Disney Channel stars, and spent the day focusing on issues such as standing up for what you believe in, becoming an “actionist”, staying confident and making a difference in your world. Moms spent the day hearing from experts on topics such as eating disorders, developing a confident daughter, cyberbullying and body image. The program culminated in an absolutely AMAZING private concert by Tiffany Thornton, Monique Coleman, Mitchell Musso and Kicking Daisies. (more…)

Internet Safety

Monday, November 1st, 2010

We have blogged about Cyberbullying previously, and now we are back to discuss Internet Safety. It seems especially appropriate with more and more cases in the news, in which young people do harm and in some cases commit crimes because they do not realize what can result from the way they use their computers. Halloween Safety Tips

Wednesday, October 27th, 2010

Every summer, we make any excuse to get dressed up and throw on some face-paint as our favorite princesses and pirates, superheros, rockstars or storybook characters – you can see campers and staff in different costumes at any given time throughout the summer!

However, for those of you who will be donning your costumes this weekend for Halloween, the TLC Family of Camps wants to ensure that all of our children are safe. The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) and SafeKids.org each published press releases on their websites this month listing some important tips to help keep our kids safe over Halloween. And while some of the things may just be mere reminders of what may seem to be the obvious, others may be something you haven’t ever thought about… Please take a look and remember to have a safe & fun Halloween!

Bullying Has Found its Place Online

Friday, May 7th, 2010

As part of our Partners In Parenting program, we felt that in light of recent events in the media, we wanted to draw your attention back to the issue of cyberbullying, and the latest effects it’s having on children today.  New laws are being created and passed across our country to help protect our children, but as you know, being well informed is the first step in helping to protect your child.
