If You’ve Been To Camp, You’d Completely Understand…
Hi everyone! My name is Allie Keller, although most people at camp just call me “Keller.” That’s me above in the leopard costume! I’m from Merrick, NY and currently a sophomore at Skidmore College, where I am a member of the basketball team. I have been going to camp for the past 8 years – 5 as a camper and 3 as a counselor.
My favorite part about camp is coming back and seeing the same people year after year. People who I wouldn’t have otherwise known have become my summer family. As a counselor, I have been lucky enough to “move up” with my campers, as they move to upper divisions. I am amazed to see how much my campers have matured, how silly they can still be, and how greatly they have impacted me.
Camp has helped me prepare for so many situations, most recently going to college. Many of my school friends struggled with freshman anxiety, as this was the first time they would be away from home for an extended period of time. For me, I was reminded that at age 13, I got on a bus to Timber Lake West knowing only a few people, and I had the best summer ever. Many of my school friends were worried about sharing a bathroom with 6-8 other girls. Me? I was relieved that it wasn’t 25 girls waiting until the last second to get out of bed, use the bathroom, and rush down to line up!
Throughout the school year, I find myself telling stories about funny things that happened at camp, or the ridiculous costumes we get ourselves into for a Wednesday Barbeque. Some of my friends don’t understand why these things are such standout memories, but if you’ve been to camp, you’d completely understand… There isn’t a day that goes by where something reminds me of camp, or a camp friend, which prompts me to go onto the camp website to check how many days are left until the first day of camp begins again.
Whether you are a counselor or a camper, the camp environment changes you in ways you wouldn’t expect. Going to Timber Lake West was the best decision I ever made! And of course what do I find myself doing as I write this? Checking the website! Only 121 days until first session and 149 days until second session! I hope everyone is having a great year so far, and is getting ready for the best summer yet – See you soon!!!
