Questions for Camper: Jeff

February 3rd, 2012. Posted by WEST Insider.

Hi!  I’m Jeff (on the right) and I’ve been a camper at TLW for 6 years. I’m pictured here with Josh who is one of my best friends from camp.  When I’m not at camp, I am on my school’s varsity volleyball team and I have a music show on my school’s radio station.  I enjoy being with my friends, taking pictures, and watching movies.  I will be returning to camp this upcoming summer as a junior counselor for both sessions.  I am really looking forward to experiencing camp from another perspective.  I feel that starting out as a camper at Timber Lake West will help me be a successful counselor because I understand what it’s like to be a camper here at this special place.

Spotlight on Staff: Brian

January 25th, 2012. Posted by WEST Insider.

Hey everyone! My name is Brian Jacobson; I am 22 years old and currently live in Amherst, NY, originally from Allendale, NJ!

I have been a part of the Timber Lake West family since 2000, when my parents signed me and my twin brother up for the July session. I was scared and nervous; sports and arts & crafts weren’t my “thing” and neither was being away from home for a night (Let alone a month!) But that month at TLW changed my life – I fell in love with my new summer family and for the next six years I continued on as a camper until I decided I wanted to be a counselor!

Hi, my name is Lily and I am in 5th grader in Cold Spring Harbor, New York. I am a huge fan of soccer and play on a travel soccer team. I’m also a huge Jets fan. GO J-E-T-S!!!  I love reading all kinds of books, especially horror and ghost stories. I also love to dance. Oh, and I love when I make new friends – the friends I have made at TLW are so special to me!! I can’t wait to go back next summer!

1) What is the number #1 thing you love most about camp?
The minute you walk through the gates and on to the beautiful TLW camp grounds you instantly fall in love with the camp and it feels like you are at home!

2) What was the funniest thing that happened to you at camp?
One day when my friend and I were in one of the canoes out in the middle of the lake (wearing our life vests for safety!), the boat was rocking back and forth!  Because the boat was rocking, I ended-up dropping my oar in the water and we started laughing hysterically.  The boating instructor had to come out to us and bring us back shore.   After that, we just couldn’t stop laughing and saying to one another “The boat is tipping, the boat is tipping!!”

3) What is your favorite memory from last summer?
My favorite memory from last summer was seeing my Color War team win! That was the best moment!! I was screaming and jumping – I was so happy!!

4) Describe camp using only 3 words:
Live, Laugh, Home

5) What are you most looking forward to doing this summer?
The thing I am most looking forward to when I go back to camp this summer is to see all my counselors and all my bunkmates – we are all like sisters.

TLW Brings Holiday Cheer to Many Deserving Children

December 21st, 2011. Posted by WEST Insider.

This holiday season, the TLC Family of Camps have come together to help out families in need with the Boys and Girls Club of Glen Cove by collecting toys and other small gifts for their Club Bucks program.

During the holiday season, the Club Bucks program is offered to the club’s children as an incentive program. Here, they earn “Club Bucks” for completing various tasks and doing good deeds, such as helping a staff person, getting an A on a test, doing all their homework, helping another friend, participate in an educational activity, etc.  At the end of the program, each child has the opportunity to “shop” in the Holiday Store to purchase gifts and toys for their siblings or other family members.  Some of the items collected were: stuffed animals, bracelets, gloves, socks, t-shirts and various children’s toys. The goal of the program is to convey the importance of “giving” during this holiday season – giving of their time, effort and service – and giving of gifts to loved ones.

Our day school, North Shore Day School, also led a food drive to help support LI Cares, a hunger action organization which distributed the canned goods we collected to local shelters and families in need.

Timber Lake West is proud to support the Boys and Girls Club & LI Cares during this season of giving and everyone here at camp wishes you a wonderful holiday and a very happy New Year!

Bringing Camp Energy to Local School

December 14th, 2011. Posted by WEST Insider.

The TLC Family of Camps have been proud participants of the Mentoring Partnership of Long Island for the past 5 years.  Dedicated to our camp organization’s mission of building self-esteem and self-confidence, more than 15 members of our full-time team travel to the Gribben Elementary School in Glen Cove twice a month to run programs for “at-risk” children.

This past week, students got to make a holiday garland of wishes, where they got to write their wishes for the New Year on snowflakes, candy canes and gingerbread men.  Whether it’s teaching a cooking class,  running team-building games, or just spending quality one-on-one time with the ‘mentees’, every mentoring program is intentionally designed to inject some “camp” energy into our local elementary school.

Hi! My name is Corey (in the center with tie) – I’m 23 years old and I live In Cape Breton, Nova Scotia, Canada. I have been going to Timber Lake West since 2008 where I started out as a General Counselor. This past year I got the opportunity to be a Group Leader. During the 10 months away from Timber Lake West I spend most of my time working hard at a local restaurant.  Ever since I was young, I’ve loved working with kids.  When the opportunity came for me to work at Timber Lake West,  I jumped on it!

These past years spent at TLW have changed me for the better, in ways that no one else could. I’ve been moving up with a group of kids for four years now and I have literally watched them grow into young adults right before my own eyes.   A few years ago, I had the unfortunate experience of losing a close friend of mine, and as with many people who grieve, I struggled hard to find a purpose.   However, returning to West year after year led me to discover that MY purpose has been camp and truly appreciating the impact I have on fostering friendships between the campers, like the one that I had with my friend. Every moment at West is something special and something that I can cherish forever.  At the staff orientation, Jenn, Justin and Cassie tell you that the campers will change your lives forever, whether its with a note, email, or just a thank you for a great summer. And it’s true – there are notes I have on my dresser that campers have given me in past summers, and they serve as a reminder that my campers aren’t just my campers anymore, they are now part of my family.

Thankful for Our TLW Family!

November 22nd, 2011. Posted by WEST Insider.

With Turkey Day only a few days away, we are so very thankful that you and your family are a part of the TLW Family.  If you think about it, family reunions at Thanksgiving are very similar to our own camp reunions!  It’s a way to come together and reconnect – to keep in touch and maintain that bond that we have with each other.  We get to see old friends and meet new ones while spending quality time over food and fun activities, catching up on the latest news since we last saw each other!

Keep an eye out in the coming months for information about our next reunion which will be sometime in the Spring of 2012.  We can’t wait to see you on that special “holiday”!

From our family to yours, Happy Thanksgiving!

Covers Cause We Care – Campers Donate Blankets!

November 14th, 2011. Posted by WEST Insider.

Timber Lake West’s very own Carly (on the right) and her friend from home Rachel (on the left) started a charity called “Covers Cause We Care.” The idea started when they noticed that many of their camp friends would bring their own personal bedding to camp and after a few summers, many would replace their bedding once camp was over.  They learned that there are many children in their home communities on Long Island who do not have a blanket to keep them warm at night, and so they started collecting the gently used camp bedding at the end of the summer and gave it to people who desperately needed it – and so, Covers Cause We Care was born!

Carly & Rachel said “We are two girls who want to help other kids and their families stay warm in the winter months. We are so lucky to have blankets on our beds, but we know that this is not the case for everyone. In the last two years we have collected and donated over 700 blankets to the amazing people at the Interfaith Nutrition Network (INN). They are the largest private social service agency on Long Island. They run 19 soup kitchens, emergency shelters and a long term housing program to help people in need all over Long Island. They are so grateful for these blankets and we are so happy to have found a way to help others in the community.”

Timber Lake West is proud to support such a worthy program and is looking forward to participating in it again this summer.  This is just another example of how creative and sensitive our campers can be and how this exemplifies what we practice here at West with our STARFISH values program.  If you have any blankets that you’d like to donate, you can email Covers Cause We Care at jbepc10@aol.com.  Kudos to Carly and Rachel!

5 Questions for Camper: Sarah

November 4th, 2011. Posted by WEST Insider.

My name is Sarah (bottom row, 2nd on left).  I am currently in High School and I live in Chappaqua, NY.  This summer was my 7th year at camp, and I was so excited to see all of my friends and enjoy the four, fun-filled weeks that make my summers so great!

What is the number #1 thing you love most about camp?
The number one thing I love most about camp would definitely have to be spending four amazing weeks with my best friends in the world. The friendships I’ve formed with the boys and girls at camp is something I wouldn’t be able to find anywhere else, and the day I get home from camp I start counting down the days until I can see them again.

What was the funniest thing that happened to you at camp?
The funniest memories I have from camp are just from being in the bunk with my friends. We definitely have the most fun when were all together. We can always make each other laugh, even if we make a fools out of ourselves while doing it.

What is your favorite memory from camp?
My favorite memory from camp was when I found out that I was a Camper Captain. There is nothing like the feeling of looking on that list, squinting through the dark, and finding your name up at the top of your division under the words “Camper Captain.” When I found out, I ran to hug all my friends; happy they were able to share the experience with me.

Describe camp using only 3 words:
My second home.

What are you most looking forward to doing at camp?
This past summer I was in the oldest division at camp. Being in the oldest division, you get “little sisters,” two overnight trips off campus, and the latest curfew! But most of all, I really loved being with all my friends and staff at a place I truly love and adore.
