Here We Go Again, For the 1st Time!

Monday, August 1st, 2011

The beauty of a 4-week sleep away camp is that if going away to camp the second half of the summer better suits your needs, then there are no worries like some parents have if you were to start your summer mid-way through a traditional 8-week sleep away camper’s summer.  At West, the first day of 2nd session is everyone’s first day, filled with all the same excitement as the first day of camp at the beginning of the summer!

Screams, hugs, tears of joy and mad dashes towards those friends and counselors who were missed so much from last year, were heard throughout the camp as everyone started to get settled in to their bunks.  We had beautiful weather for our Opening Day BBQ and everyone was thrilled to be back together again.  Welcome back home TLW 2nd Session campers!!!  Welcome home!

End of 1st Session – White Rio wins Color War against Red Hong Kong!

Thursday, July 21st, 2011

1 – 2 – 3 – 4 – WE WANT COLOR WAR!!!!!!   Color War for 1st session was filled with excitement and lots of energy from both the White Rio & Red Hong Kong teams.  Break-out (The official commencement of Color War) is always in the back of our camper’s mind as days of “Fake-outs” (fake break-outs!) take place just to keep them on their toes!

The official break-out happened, and boy our campers were surprised!  Team lists dropped from the sky and campers prepared to compete against one another.  Stakes were high in events like Tug-o-War, blind-folded canoe race, egg toss and everyone’s favorite – an Apache Relay.   Sing Night came to a conclusion as the teams sang their alma maters (videos below!) and when all the points were tallied, White came out on top with only an 8.7 point difference!

We had such a fantastic 1st session with our campers!  We can’t believe how quickly time flew by!  We look forward to seeing all of our 1st Session campers again next summer :)

As we like to say: Timber Lake West campers get the full camp experience in just half the time!  Color War is certainly no exception.  See for yourself in the below videos and pictures! (Wonder how 2nd Session Color War will turn out…  Hummmm…..)

Open House

Wednesday, June 15th, 2011

We woke up to the sound of pouring rain this past Saturday – the day of our New Camper Open House!  But as it is in camp, we go rain or shine!

We promptly sent out an email to the parents of all of our New Campers letting them know we were still on.  The rain subsided close to the start of the Open House and our New Campers and their Parents started streaming down our hill into camp.  Mother Nature must have been looking out for us, as it was only misting just a bit.  The New Campers and their families took a tour of camp and learned what Opening Day will be like.  The Directors, Justin, Cassie and Jenn met with the parents to give them some last minute tips and suggestions for helping make the transition to Camp a smooth one, while the Leadership Team took the New Campers to play some games.

We didn’t let a little damp weather slow us down!  We all had a great time!  Everyone was happy and looking forward to Camp. It had us wishing June 26th was here already and Camp could start now! :)

Test Drive Camp At One Of Our Rookie Days!

Tuesday, May 10th, 2011

Selecting the right camp for your child is both important and impactful. Camp is, for most people, an experience that can last for six or more years (with memories that last for many decades after!)  At TLW, we know that such a big decision shouldn’t be made lightly, so we’ve specifically designed our Rookie Day Program to allow your child an opportunity to “taste” the sleep away camp experience, while giving you, as parents, a close-up look at our facilities, program, supervision and philosophy.  Oh, and all the fun too :) (more…)

5 Questions for Camper …

Thursday, January 20th, 2011

My name is Jessica F.! I am 12 years old and live in Woodbury, NY. I have been at TLW for the last three summers. When people ask me why I didn’t go to a 7 week camp, my answer is always the same “because West is my home and I can’t imagine spending my summer anywhere else!” At home, I am on a travel and intramural basketball team and I pitch in our softball league in the spring. I have two younger sisters, (both future West campers) and a dog named Daisy. I am so psyched for this weekend because all the “Dwarfs” (my first session bffl’s – Best Friends For Life) are having a sleepover!

1) What is the number #1 thing you love most about camp?
The # 1 thing I love most about camp is the people! I love all my friends and I love the staff too!

2) What was the funniest thing that happened to you at camp?
The funniest thing that ever happened to me was one time I went to the Health Center because my ankle was bothering me the littlest bit, but I was being lazy and didn’t want to change for swim. When I saw how much fun everyone was having in the pool – I pulled off my ace bandage and jumped in with all my clothes on!

3) What is your favorite memory from last summer?
My favorite memory from last summer was when I scored 6 home runs in one inning of BBG during Color War! Soccer Tom told me afterwards that I was in the running for MVP of all of girls’ side- and I WON!

4) Describe camp using only 3 words:
MY FAVORITE PLACE

5) What are you most looking forward to doing this summer?
This summer I’m most looking forward to being in Tribeca! (please please please…) Okay, just kidding… I’m looking forward to Color War (with my dwarfs).

Rookie Day #2!

Sunday, August 8th, 2010

This past Saturday was Timber Lake West’s second of two Rookie Days for summer 2010! Rookie Day is a one-day program that invites prospective campers (entering 3rd through 6th grade in September 2010) to participate with other prospective campers and our current campers in the activities, spirit, fun and excitement of Timber Lake West. Parents start the day with their children. Then, as the children go off with their counselors and new friends for a power-packed day of activities and fun, parents get a complete tour of our campus, get to meet our staff and speak with our directors, Jenn, Justin, Cassie and Nancy. After that, it’s time for parents to have some fun enjoying local sites, engaging in some of the area’s activities, and having lunch in town on us! The parents returned later in the afternoon, during snack to pick up their children, who we hope will be our future campers.

Interested in joining us for a tour of camp? It’s not too late! Contact our office at (845) 439-4440 for more information.

Check out this great video of the awesome activities our Rookies got to do while at West!

Rookie Day at TLW

Sunday, July 18th, 2010

S’mores and Tours and and a whole lot more! A few days ago we invited prospective campers to participate with our current campers in the daily excitement here at camp! While our future campers quickly went off with their counselors and new friends for a power-packed day of activities and fun, their parents got a complete tour of our camp, met some of our staff and spoke with our directors, Jennifer, Justin, Nancy & Cassie. Camp is Now in Session!!!!

Tuesday, June 29th, 2010

At 1:15pm on Saturday, we were all standing in the Commons as 6 Coach buses slowly made their way around the circle of the Commons. The staff was clapping and cheering all the campers as we set off on this summer journey together. We all had goose bumps, our hearts were beating like crazy… Finally – the summer of 2010 has officially begun! It’s amazing that after 9 months of preparation, staff hiring, purchasing new equipment and remodeling projects, we’ve ultimately made it to Opening Day! (more…)

Getting Our Staff Ready For You!

Friday, June 25th, 2010

We know we are getting that much closer to Opening Day when the Pre-Camp Crew is putting the finishing touches on the grounds, the pools are filled and the lake is set up! The Waterfront Staff and Outdoor Adventure Crews have arrived and are done training for their respective areas. Orientation is well under way and we have a fabulous staff this year! After learning new games and some of the Timber Lake West Ways from our Alma Mater to “the Mostest Game”, the entire staff left the grounds for an evening of “cosmic bowling” which bowlers of all skill levels enjoyed. TWO DAYS until the buses roll into the Commons and we cannot wait to get the 2010 season started!

Don’t Forget to Pack….

Tuesday, June 22nd, 2010

If your house is like my house, there are piles of clothing sitting in the living room along with an assortment of sports equipment, toiletries, and other assorted camp paraphernalia all waiting to be stuffed into duffel bags crumpled up on the couch. There is still some labeling to do and a few more vital supplies to pick-up before every last bit is ready. It will really never be fully ready and I know we’ll forget an item or two, but that’s what UPS is for. Yes, it’s clearly camp time! (more…)
